Beer #1738 is a stout brewed by Eight Degrees Brewing in County Cork, Ireland.

A third from Eight Degrees with the intention of making it a hat-trick. Thankfully it’s a decent stout, roasted malts, chocolate, some caramel, a bit of vanilla and maybe a touch of licorice. It’s a tad on the watery side, not as full-bodied as I’d hoped for but it’s still a good solid stout.

The bottle size is 330ML with an alcohol content of 5.00% (containing approximately 1.30 AU / 1.60 UK standard drinks), and it cost me $6.25.

My Rating is 6.00/10 which means it’s a good solid beer and it comes recommended.

Like tackling the Knockmealdowns in a blizzard, this beer is not for wimps. Balancing dark malts with some old world bitter hops, this robust stout offers a rich chocolaty aroma with distinctive espresso flavours. Makes a traditional beef stew taste that bit beefier, contrasts beautifully with blue cheese or savour with chocolate cake. Perfect for a cooler evening: year round in Ireland. Style: Dry Irish stout. Malt: Irish pale malt, dark crystal, roasted barley, chocolate malt, flaked barley. Hops: Fuggles, Admiral. Strength: 5% ABV. Bitterness: 41 IBUs. Tasting notes: Colour/appearance: pours a jet black with a tan brown head. Aroma: malt-forward, espresso and molasses nose. Flavour: a roasted mocha flavour with smooth mouthfeel. Aftertaste: dry, almost milk chocolate in the finish. Food pairings: When the weather turns cold, this works brilliantly – in and with – a traditional beef and stout stew. Try it with lobster and prepare to be pleasantly surprised as the beer brings out the sweetness in the shellfish. For something completely different, hang on to the stout for the end of the meal; bold chocolate and espresso flavours make it good accompaniment to a dense, but not over-sweet, chocolate cake or contrast the sweetness of the stout with the saltiness of Irish blue cheese and oatcakes. Well worth trying in a chocolate cake or brownies.
