Mango Magnifico con Calor

Beer #2149 is an ale brewed by Founders in Grand Rapids, Michigan, America.

Founders are a pretty consistent brewery and have only mildly disappointed me the once so my expectations of them are high. This thankfully does not disappoint, in fact it’s one of the best fruit beers I’ve ever had. Fruit beers tend to be in the same category as coffee beers for me in that they always overdo the fruit/coffee at the expense of the actual beer. This one certainly smelled of mango the moment I opened the bottle (reeked would be too strong a word) but to my surprise the mango was much more subdued in the actual taste (delicate is the word that I think Founders themselves used). From the very first sip the habanaro chili made its presence felt, delivering a whopping warmth to my tastebuds. By the end of the beer my mouth was alive and hot but not in an unpleasant way. The sweetness made itself felt immediately too but as I progressed through the glass (and ultimately the bottle) the sweetness never became cloying. The habanaro certainly balances the sweetness out and takes the beer to a whole new level. You can sure taste the malt and it’s not relegated to the background either. There’s what tastes like honey up front as well. Bitterness is there and the 10% ABV is virtually undetectable and maybe that imparts some warmth too along with the chili, who knows. It’s definitely a sipping beer, and it took me an hour and half to get down it. Being the cheap (?) drunk that I am this is my first and last beer tonight. Excellent, and even at $35AUD I’ll definitely get another bottle.

The bottle size is 750ML with an alcohol content of 10.00% (containing approximately 5.90 AU / 7.50 UK standard drinks), and it cost me $34.99.

My Rating is 7.25/10 which means it’s a terrific beer.
